December 2007 General Meeting:

Our General Meeting on Tuesday, December 4th, will feature  "An Introduction to GIS (Geographic Information Systems)" presented by Keith Johnson. GIS involves specialized software and databases containing geographic ("map-able") information. This information, which includes not only map features but descriptive details about those features, can be queried, analyzed, cross-tabulated and displayed as digital map images. Keith will provide an overview of how GIS works and how it is used as a decision-support system for a wide range of applications including planning, emergency response, public health, engineering & construction, demographic studies, and environmental analysis.

ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 by ESRI (www.esri.com) will be the software focus of Keith's discussion. ESRI is the world's leading designer and developer of GIS software, their most widely-known product being ArcView. ESRI's extremely diverse product line includes GIS solutions for many different professional disciplines. ESRI's product line also caters to a wide variety of users with different needs and levels of ability; their products range from free, easy-to-use downloadable GIS data viewers to extremely sophisticated high-end systems employed by corporations, governments and educational institutions.

About the Presenter:

Keith J. Johnson is the Amador County GIS Coordinator, based in the Information Technology Department. A resident of Fiddletown, he has 15 years' worth of experience supporting GIS operations in government agencies, private corporations and academic institutions from New England to California. He is also a member and volunteer of ACUG's GIS SIG (Special Interest Group) which meets the 4th Wednesday at 5:30 PM at the New York Fitness Center.
